Helen has twenty years of experience in individual and couple therapy and is known for her compassionate, supportive and solution focused approach.
She is a registered Clinical Psychologist, with post graduate training both in New Zealand and overseas (including various specialist treatment clinics affiliated with McGill University in Canada). She currently works in private practice.
Helen is easy to talk to, listens with empathy, and believes in proactively reducing distress as quickly as possible. In addition to her experience with individuals, she has advanced training in couple counselling, using constructive and respectful approaches that have an established record in creating more satisfying, loving relationships.
While Helen has a strong background in cognitive behaviour therapy (an effective talking treatment for those suffering from stress, anxiety and low mood), she uses a variety of evidence based approaches and goal focused therapies, tailoring them to the individual needs and preferences of each client. She is trained and experienced in the following modalities; Solution Focused Therapy, Mindfulness, Narrative Therapy, Supportive Psychotherapy, EMDR for trauma (advanced), CBT, Mindfulness-Integrated Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy.
Helen works in an inclusive and respectful manner. She considers the fundamental component of her work to be empathic attunement. Her approach has been influenced by the wisdom, experience and interpersonal style of a number of valued teachers from several cultures and covering various perspectives, both secular and spiritual.
For much of her career Helen has worked overseas, in clinics specialising in Cognitive Behavioural Services, Eating Disorders, Psychiatric and Psychological Services, Family Services, Employee Assistance Services and, since returning to New Zealand, in Private Practice.
